Springs Openers Doors

Garage Doors in Winston ParkHeavy door.
Steady hands.

A residential garage door can weigh as much as two grown adults, and the springs above it are wound to carry exactly that load. Our technicians in Winston Park work with winding bars, clamps and stands, secure the door before touching tension, and run it through full cycles before they call the job finished.

How a visit goes

Noise is usually the first complaint and the easiest to trace. Steel rollers rumbling, hinges squeaking, a chain slapping the rail, panels rattling against loose hardware.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 58 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Extension springs are common on older doors, and they should carry a safety cable through the middle so a broken spring is held rather than flung. Adding those cables is a small job the technician checks for and offers on any older door he services.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).Townhouse rows generally have a narrow single door on each unit, with shared walls on both sides. Noise from a chain opener or dry rollers carries straight into the neighbour's home, so quiet belt-drive openers and nylon rollers are a popular and considerate choice here.

Asked and answered

Will the springs be adjusted while you are there?

No, and that is deliberate. An inspection reads the counterbalance: the technician checks the coil, measures wire size and length, and watches how the door behaves by hand. If it is out of step with the door's weight, the report says so and by how much. Winding a spring is its own appointment, done once the door is clamped and the system is calm, which keeps the inspection record honest about the door as found.

Our shop's overhead door was hit by a delivery vehicle. Is this the same service?

Yes, with the extra weight and size of a commercial door taken into account. The door is secured, the impact damage to sections, track and brackets is assessed, and the reset is paired with whatever track or hardware replacement the strike requires. Because the opening usually needs to be secured before the premises can close for the night, tell the technician when you call so the right track profile and rollers arrive with them.

What information helps when I book?

The size of the door and whether it is single or double, where you see daylight or feel drafts, whether the existing seal is a strip on a wood stop or a one-piece moulding, the colour of the trim, whether the wood near the floor feels soft, and whether the garage is attached or heated. Photos of the closed door from inside with the lights off, and of each corner from outside, are very useful.

I lubricated everything and the grinding came back. Why?

Lubricant restores bearings and hinges that are still sound; it has nothing to offer a wheel worn oval, a nylon tire that has cracked, or bearings whose balls have pitted their race. When a spray settles the noise for a day or two and it returns, the wear is in the roller itself and replacement is the answer. Spray on the track or a plastic wheel can make matters worse by collecting grit, so the technician cleans that off as part of the job.
